Prospects and Updates for the 2011/12 Season |
2011 Prospect update
After
a very trying year it is now time to start thinking about June 16th and a new
season on the rivers. Last season we had some very good reports of fish on both
rivers, the River Beult had some very good surprises with tench to 6lb plus and
chub to nearly 3lb along with some very nice roach to about a pound, and if it
is predators your after the pike sport can be very hectic and you might be
surprised with the size of some of the perch that are in there.
Considering the size of this river the fishing can brilliant. With the
River Medway you should be able to pick up around 10lb of mixed fish on a good
day. If you use sweetcorn there are some very nice roach to be had and if you tip it
with a worm then bream start to take notice, the bream generally go to around
4lb. There are also some very nice chub to 4lb if you can tempt them out from
under the bank. Later in the season last year the pike activity was a little bit
hectic as they were taking some of the roach that were being caught and they
only seemed to take the fish that were 6oz and over, again there are some very
big perch here as well. On both of the river if you use maggot you will probably
get pestered with bleak and last years fry so it normally pays to have just a
little bit bigger bait for the bigger fish.
2010 Match Report
"The 2010 competition season saw Kevin Denny steal the limelight and retain
the Walter Smith Shield, winning all five competitions in the process. Due to
high levels of duck weed growth on the river Buelt, four of the five matches
were held on the Medway at Golden Green. The bream shoals known in the stretch
didn't put in an appearance for much of the season, but fortunately the roach
and perch fishing exceeded expectations. Bags of roach and perch into double
figures were common, and included one winning weight of 15lb 12oz. Good back
up weights were also recorded making this one special stretch of river. Roach
were taken to the pound mark with the perch regularly making 2lb, with the
largest match perch recorded at 2lb 4oz. Legered lobworm in close accounted
for most of the perch, with the roach being taken on a number of methods, most
notably on the float with corn or maggot over ground bait. Regular feeding was
often the key to drawing in and keeping a shoal in front of you. Later on it
the season a few bream started to show, particularly at the upstream end of
the stretch.
The Buelt match this year was held in October and proved to be a frustrating
affair. Those intrepid anglers who turned up found the fishing very hard going
on what can be a prolific fishery given the right conditions. Passing duckweed
hampered good presentation throughout the match, which was eventually won with
a small bag of perch.
The Christmas comp wasn't run due to the heavy snow and generally inclement
weather, but this will be run at a later date.
Hopes are high for a good 2011 match fishing season and, with the roach and
perch fishing expected to be as impressive as in 2010, all members are invited
to come along and fish the competitions which are all held in a friendly and
lightly competitive atmosphere."
